It is worth doing a search on bookfinder and alibris to see if you can get yourselves an affordable copy of Sindh and the Races that Inhabit the Valley of the Indus. It has been reprinted a number of times and I didnt have trouble finding a copy.

And...it has become one of my favorite bedside reading books. Burton was endlessly curious..though you will have to make allowances for someone who was sexist and racist, per the standards of his time.

But if you can swallow hard and get past that, Burton will pay you back a hudnredfold. And it is too his credit that he married a woman who was as feisty as he was, and probably the only person could tell him what to do...and be obeyed.

(Note: Lovell, Burtons most recent biographer, makes a strong case that Isabel Burton did NOT destroy his papers wholesale after he died. She was determined to preserve as much of his scholarly legacy as was possible, and did it despite being greatly hampered by illness herself.)

If intrigued by Burton, get and read Lovells biography of Burton and his wife, entitled A Rage to Live. Even the footnotes are fascinating.

You are right, this is gripping stuff, and the answer to much headscratching I have done over the years as to sufis.
This data leaves me almost horizontal, even as it confirms my suspicions.
Clearly Gurdjieff was griping that he had lost the power of flogging and beheading, although he tried to produce substitutes.

Am overworked and in a hurry: will comment on this later (it requires some reflection).

Obviously Burton is important here, pace my previous hasty remarks about intelligence agents.
