The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

I tried to horn into the sphere of Mr. Gold in 1980. He was dynamic and more alive than anyone I had ever met. He was an obvious bull-shitter who was in love with Art, exhibited meagre painting and musical talent and loved the action. He was somewhat abusive by commission and omission. He needs followers to stay alive. He needs people who are interested, to the point of their own discomfort, in expanding their good selves. If one has doubt that he is "for real", I might mention the great beginning attribute a seeker should notice in a teacher - the never-dying involvement with an idea, an effortlessly sustained thrust into the unknown, which is where life and God live. I knew by acquaintance some members of his long-time group in Grass Valley. They are decent people, a little on the egotistical side and having some minor talents, as well as some being physically strong and coordinated, some being somewhat caring. I was not encouraged to join in fellowship with them, because of my immaturity, profound fear and sadness from great and painful awakenings earlier in my life and general personal social weakness. I still dream of being a part of the great adventure to which Mr. Gold and his team have said "yes". I would drop everything and follow in a heartbeat if I were wanted or needed. I go on with the richness and responsibility which is my life in the absence of any work opportunity. Yes, Mr. Gold is "for real", God help him. However, a teacher is a person and may not resonate with the student's background and preparation. Mr. Gold is middle class, from a pop culture background, with the abrasiveness and confidence of a New Yorker. He's lost in the richness of the 70's and uses the rococo tapestries of that time to pursue his work. He is also amoral about money and will take yours without a thought, because we are all hairless apes to him - infesting his planet and poisoning his time. This is not a good aspect of Mr. Gold and it will take another lifetime for him to change this. It will not change if he is surrounded by adoring students. It is a fine fix for him. It would be good for Mr. Gold to get a job, probably never having held one. A man who cannot feed twenty people with his labour is not worthy of the name "man". This is not a metaphor, and conning is not a job. Thieving will take E.J. only so far. But in the meantime, his energy and work can energize some people, and we pray that a student will take some of the word and grow to teach more of us. Mr. Gold is not Christ, who himself was not the greatest guy to plunk onto the planet. Good is good and shit is shit and both live in Mr. Gold.
