Hinduism is a name given by the so called "foreign invadors" for the people who live across the river Indus. The religion itself is more a way of life than an organized religion.....they way a religion is supposed to be according to westerners and those follwoing monotheistic religions...........

though most of the customs have survived over centuries/ millenia shows that, whether you call it Hinduism or anything else, its still the same thing now as way back then...................

But the fact is that Donigers book, although interesting for non Hindus especially those in the west, is hugely inaccurate and I dont think that she has really understood what Hinduism is really all about. She is making the same mistake of looking at Hinduism the way she probably looks at other religions..............in that case i believe that she has the right to do so.......but it is still inaccurate.

The aryan invasion theory- whether it happened or not is another question but the fact that they came (IF) and adopted the traditions of the land cant be debated

After I read it i was more amused than angry or hurt (as most Hindus were) but then dont worry we aint gonna issue a fatwa or blow up a building or anything......;-)

You have missed our point here: the real Indian tradition existed before Hinduism, and in reality it was this tradition that gave birth to the 'peace' theme, not the Indo-European strain with its built in violence.

[...] Doniger’s The Hindus. James cites some criticisms by Witzel of Doniger. But my interest in the book isn’t concerned with the eccentricities of Doniger, which are apparently considerable. As I was reading the book my older views of Indian history from the 1990’s resurfaced, after a considerable rethinking, in relation to the AIT/OIT debate(discussed here on this blog). Students of India now have a problem: it is almost a PC issue to criticize/not criticize the AIT. Although I remain open in this debate, and plan to continue exploring the problems with the AIT, I am suddenly suspicious that, while the AIT is heavily prejudicial, that applies only to its surface interpretation. Or perhaps Indians can’t quite face the reality: a group of Aryan cowboys/cattle rustlers came whooping in and became assimilated barbarians. [...]
