On the trail of the Shah/Gurdjieff connection

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:08 pm by

The question of Idries Shah is especially confusing, and thanks to MBFM for the data he is uncovering.
I have previously maintained that I came across a meeting of the young Shah and Gurdjieff, then couldn’t find it when challenged.
Whatever the case, the question of Shah is linked with that of Gurdjieff: we are missing some pieces.

We can pursue this issue in the New Year, along with various others.
I am thinking of going over the fourth volume, once again, of Bennett’s The Dramatic Universe. I made a discovery last time I did that: if you follow his logic, that is the best critique, even as it raises issues that are important.

Gurdjieff was denied a visa to enter and reside in the UK. He passed
through Turkey and Germany after leaving Tsarist Russian territory and eventually settled in or near Paris.

So, Shah would have had to leave the UK and go to whatever part of Europe Gurdjieff was in.

And, Gurdjieff was in Paris during the years of Vichy and the Nazi occupation, and this would have made it difficult to reach him.

So its up to someone to establish Idries Shahs chronology and travel patterns and see if they match at any point with Gurdjieff.

In any case, the material from Gary Garrard’s book settles the case to my personal satisfaction.

I am not sure just how I got this idea, or where I came across it. Probably from some of I. Shah’s materials, in the seventies, and probably this was an invention of Shah’s???

There’s a vignette of Shah, at the fringe of Gurjieff’s Paris circle, in Pauwell & Bergers’ ‘Morning of the Magicians’.
