The German Genius: Europe’s Third Renaissance, the Second Scientific Revolution and the Twentieth Century
Peter Watson’s colossal encyclopaedia, The German Genius, might have been written for me, but not only for me. A journalist of heroic industry, Watson is frustrated by the British ignorance of Germany, or rather by an expertise devoted exclusively to Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust. Watson wonders not just why the nation of thinkers and poets came to grief between 1933 and 1945 but also how it put itself together again and, in 1989, recreated most of the Wilhelmine state without plunging Europe into war or even breaking sweat.
The New Age attack on modernity is totally misconceived: we see the effects of the modern ‘Axial Age’ in Germany, and, indeed, Schopenhauer virtually rewrote the Upanishadic philosophy (but not its practice, of course) for the modern age.

My husband and I are writing a dual memoir about our life in a Fourth Way School. I believe we were dupped by someone who interpreted the Work of Gurdjieff and fabricated the description of this man in order to justify the many manipulations used to rob us and others of our time, energy and loads of money! In my research I have read several out of print, first hand accounts of life with Mr. Gurdjieff. It has become clear to me that the ’70′s opened opportunities for charlatans to take the teachings which otherwise seemed innocent and pure from the source and utilized them for selfish intentions.

I should note that the Gurdjieff world is even more pernicious here than anything from the real of scientism.
The concealed Nietzschean nihilism of the Gurdjieff gangsters has perverted the stream of Christian/Moslem exoteric religion itself, so it is not surprising the secular public tries to reinvent the subject.

Birth of a Tragedy: Andrew Cohen, Joel Snider and the Sad Death of Sudharman
I think it is testimony to the fake in Cohen that he is so violent against ‘ego’ with students: it is his way of proving that he is somehow ‘enlightened’ when he is not.
No etiology of mental illness, or explanation of any other kind, can address the horror of Sudharman’s senseless murder or assuage the sadness of his loss to his family, friends, and the many who have been touched and inspired by his life. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of them. Nor can Andrew Cohen be blamed for this loss. Yet Snider’s statement of his encounter with Cohen—as colored as it may be by his own psychopathology—is worth considering. Its tale of descent into schizophrenia precipitated by a bad experience at a spiritual retreat with Cohen is an important piece in a tragic puzzle. While some of the events reported may be attributed to the distortions of a disturbed mind, others—the pattern of group pressure, confrontation, insults, and public and private humiliation—ring true for those, like us, who have known Cohen personally and attended retreats with him, and they are echoed in a multitude of testimonials of former students on this site. At least we can learn from this tale of sadness, sickness and horror, how important it is to be careful and kind in our communications and conduct, because we seldom know fully the vulnerabilities of the people we are affecting. This is true for all of us. But especially for those who take upon themselves the role of spiritual teacher, guide or guru, as has Cohen, a misstep can be devastating and its consequences can be more far-reaching than can ever be imagined.
