this article makes the claim that Jesus was really a kind of ‘indian’ guru with disciples, etc…
One should be wary of such comparisons. First, we know very little about ‘jesus’: he is almost an historical phantom. Next, it is very hard to decipher his ‘teaching’, if he had one. But on the basis of later evidence (by their fruits, etc…) he spoke of ‘salvation’, not of enlightenment. The former pertains to the ‘will’ which gurus of the eastern type completely bypass.
To see the difference, check out Bennett’s The Dramatic Universe where a strange concoction of samkhya, sufism, and Schopenhauer makes ‘will’ a central focus.
The question of xtianity is obscure at all points and can’t be subject to exposes as with guruism: it is a complex labyrinth with thousands of ‘ghostly disciples’. Probably ordinary xtians never encounter or interact with the ‘christ’ mystery, whatever it is. But I would suspect that the whole religion is becoming derelict, witness the ‘prosperity’ gospels and the american religious right. Who knows? One should proceed with caution.
Note that the one point of ‘feedback’ with a true ‘higher power’, i.e. the modern Reformation, spawned a set of revolutionary movements, e.g.Luther, and especially Thomas Munze, and then the abolitionists: the first modern communist. This is unnverving for traditionalists: the whole historical sequence is completely suspect as is the current remnant of the ‘religion’.
However the ‘eonic’ or ‘macro’ effect which transformed xtianity in the reformation was not a ‘jesus’ or ‘christ’ phenomenon, which means that the protestantism of the reformation has no real christological compoent beyond a set of archetypes and memes. And it decayed very rapidly to become first a gateway to secularism, long before it became its antagonist…

Again, I have no knowledge of the figure ‘jesus’ who was cleverly disposed of early on so that the ‘hidden who/what’s’ could manufacture their religion of the roman empire…
